What usually moves Bitcoin and Ethereum
- Interest-rate expectations. Crypto trades as a risk asset. Hotter inflation data or hawkish Fed signals tend to weigh on BTC and ETH, while softer data tends to help.
- Leverage and liquidations. When prices move fast, leveraged futures positions get force-closed, which amplifies the move. A large liquidation total explains why a 3% dip can become a 6% one.
- ETF and institutional flows. Inflows and outflows from spot crypto ETFs show whether big money is adding or reducing exposure.
- The dollar. A strengthening US dollar often coincides with weaker crypto prices.
- Coin-specific news. Upgrades, hacks, regulation or exchange issues can move one coin regardless of the market.
Why ETH often moves more than BTC
Ether has historically been more volatile than Bitcoin, and in sell-offs it often carries a larger share of the leveraged positions that get liquidated, so its percentage moves tend to be bigger in both directions.
