How to read a market day in 60 seconds
- Start with the index moves. The S&P 500 is the broad US market; the Nasdaq Composite is tech-heavy; the Dow is 30 large companies weighted by share price. When the Nasdaq falls much more than the Dow, it usually means growth/tech stocks drove the move.
- Find the one macro driver. Most big index days trace back to a single cause: an inflation print (CPI/PPI), a jobs report, a Fed comment, or bond yields moving sharply.
- Check the 10-year Treasury yield. Rising yields tend to pressure richly valued growth stocks, because future profits are worth less today.
- Look at the biggest single-stock movers. Large moves usually have a concrete catalyst: earnings, guidance, a deal, a filing, an analyst change or a legal outcome.
- Ask what's next. Tomorrow's calendar (data, earnings, Fed speakers) tells you which story continues.
